Start with understanding the waste

Waste management begins with characterization. Process knowledge, chemical composition, safety data and—where needed—analytical information help determine how a waste stream should be managed and what information a receiving facility needs.

What is a waste profile?

A waste profile communicates the characteristics of a waste stream to a waste service provider or receiving facility. Recurring or bulk waste streams often need a defined profile supported by accurate process and composition information. The profile should reflect the actual waste, not merely a convenient description.

What is a lab pack?

Laboratory packing is a specialized method for managing compatible small containers of chemicals. It can be highly effective for research laboratories, cleanouts and diverse chemical inventories, but it still requires identification, compatibility segregation, appropriate packaging, documentation and a defined disposal route.

Why destination and method matter

EPA's manifest system is designed to track regulated hazardous waste from the generator facility to the off-site facility that will store, treat or dispose of it. Generators therefore benefit from understanding the receiving facility and proposed management method—not simply the transportation vendor.

Incineration, recycling, fuel blending, treatment and other methods are not interchangeable. The appropriate path depends on the waste, regulatory status, facility permits/acceptance, technical considerations and organizational objectives.

Build waste into the process

The best time to decide how a new waste stream will be managed is before the process starts. Scale-up, new chemistry and pilot operations can change volumes, composition and disposal options. Waste planning belongs in operational readiness.
