Air sampling is one tool

Air sampling can quantify a contaminant under defined conditions. That can be extremely valuable—but a sample without context may answer only a narrow question. Was the process representative? Where was the sampler located? What task was occurring? How long did it run? What ventilation was operating? What exposure limit or decision criterion will be used?

An investigation starts before the pump

A competent industrial hygiene investigation begins by defining the question. The hygienist or investigator reviews the process, materials, safety data, tasks, routes of exposure, duration and frequency, existing controls, ventilation and worker practices. That information determines whether sampling is needed and what kind of sampling can answer the question.

Personal, area and direct-reading measurements do different jobs

Personal sampling can estimate an individual's breathing-zone exposure. Area sampling helps characterize a location or process but generally should not be treated automatically as a worker exposure result. Direct-reading instruments can reveal peaks, trends and process changes in real time, while laboratory methods may provide analyte-specific quantitative results.

Interpretation matters

The result has to be interpreted against an appropriate occupational exposure limit or other decision criterion, with attention to sampling duration, analytical limitations and the conditions during the test. The investigation should then connect the result back to the source and controls.

The B² distinction

We do not start with “How many samples do you want?” We start with “What decision are we trying to make?” Sampling is designed around that decision.

The goal is control, not data collection

A useful investigation ends with practical conclusions: whether additional characterization is needed, whether ventilation or work practices should change, whether personal protective equipment is appropriate, and how the organization should verify that improvements work.
